Your Living Room Build Checklist

When building or remodeling your home’s living room, it can be hard to know where to start. You might have an idea in your head of what you like but have no idea how to fit it into your space. Perhaps you don’t even know how big you want the space yet, don’t worry that is what we are here for. At Engelsma we are experts in making home dreams a reality. We have come up with a simple checklist of things to consider when planning out your future living room build or remodel.

Layout/Space

Perhaps the most important thing you will decide will be the size and layout of your living room. It can be easy to look at the size of your overall home and just throw out a number but let’s put some thought into it. Consider the amount of furniture you plan to have in the space, how you plan to use the space, and how many people you need to accommodate. Knowing what all you plan to put into the room can help you determine the size and layout of the room. If you plan to accommodate a large family with many guests, a larger room may be needed, while if you prefer a small cozy place to curl up and read, a small room might be better.

Walls/Ceiling/Windows

Your living room’s walls and ceilings can change the entire feel of the room. High vaulted ceilings can make a small room feel open and large. An open concept with fewer walls between rooms can give you more space and make your room flow. However, if you wish to have a quiet nook feel or private vibe these may not be the best options for you. You may opt for standard 8-9-foot ceilings and a beautiful entrance door with lots of windows for lighting. Windows can be a great way to add to the feel and texture of a room. They should complement the room’s overall design and allow light into primary areas.

Focal Point

It is common for living rooms to focus or center around one big or compelling object. This focal point can be anything from a fireplace to a tv, or from a piano to a built-in. Having a focal point allows you to easily set the rest of your room and gives the eye something to center on when you enter the room. Choosing your focal point can help you plan seating, design, and much more.

Day to Day Use

As mentioned above, it’s important to think about what you need in the room and how you will be using it. If your living room is the heart of your home where your children play, and your family gathers you may want a big space with lots of light. Families may want to consider adding storage to their living room layout to easily store things like toys and keepsakes. Those who are tech-savvy should plan for places to plug in and display their electronics. A beautiful built-in can be great for your large tv, speakers, and gaming systems. If you are planning to host often think about what will make your guest and you the most comfortable without requiring a lot clean up or rearranging every time.
