A constrained lakeshore site where the grade, the views, and the water access all pull in different directions. The siting decisions made here determine how the home is lived in for decades: which level captures the lake, which spaces connect to the outdoors, and how three generations share a home without sharing a schedule. Highfield Beach was conceived to answer all of it for a family that wanted a generational asset.
Organizing a multi-level home on a constrained lakeshore site required preserving views from primary living areas while providing direct, practical access to outdoor living from multiple levels. The site demanded a choice: build to the easiest elevation, or build to the best one. A lower configuration would have simplified construction and grading and handed the lake views to the level where the family stores things rather than the level where they live. Every other decision in the design followed from getting this one right.
Engelsma sited and configured a residence featuring:
The rooms where the family spends its time earned the best views.
Fully functional for guests without competing for the main floor's experience.
Main floor, lower level, upper level. Three generations, three schedules, no friction.
High enough in the home to give kids their own world.
Designed for the hours between dinner and dark.
Tucked beneath the screen porch, direct access to the lakefront path.
This project demonstrates Engelsma’s ability to materially improve a home’s lived experience through siting and elevation decisions most buyers will never consciously notice, but feel every day. The primary living areas (where life happens) capture the lake as a constant presence, while secondary spaces remain functionally useful without overshadowing the main experience. That this home was conceived without a specific buyer in place reflects the depth of Engelsma’s understanding of how multi-generational lakeshore homes are actually inhabited.
This residence demonstrates Engelsma’s discipline in elevating a home’s lived experience through siting and configuration decisions that compound in value across generations of use.
