Highfield Beach

Engelsma designed Highfield Beach for the buyer who understands what makes a lakeshore home worth keeping for generations: views that hold their value, outdoor living that connects directly to the water, and a layout that comfortably hosts three generations on different schedules. Built on a constrained lakeshore site where every decision affects the lived experience for decades, this residence was conceived as a generational family asset from day one.

Challenge

Organizing a multi-level home on a constrained lakeshore site required preserving views from primary living areas while providing direct, practical access to outdoor living from multiple levels. The siting decision determined how the home would actually be lived in for the next several generations. A lower elevation would have simplified construction and grading, but it would have placed too much experiential weight on the lower level instead of elevating the rooms where life happens. The trade-offs at this stage are largely invisible to a future buyer but felt every single day.

Solution

Engelsma sited and configured a residence featuring:

ELEVATED MAIN-LEVEL VIEWS

Capturing the lake from kitchen, screen porch, and great room, where the family spends most of its time.

A WALK-OUT LOWER LEVEL

Fully functional for guests and recreation without competing for primary views.

THREE GENERATIONS OF SEPARATE SUITES

A main-floor owner suite, plus secondary suites on the lower and upper levels.

A THIRD-LEVEL BUNK ROOM

Built for groups of children and grandchildren staying together.

A SCREEN PORCH WITH UNINTERRUPTED LAKE VIEWS

Positioned off the main living area as the home’s outdoor center.

INTEGRATED GOLF CART STORAGE

Tucked beneath the screen porch with direct access to the community path leading to the lakefront.

Distinction

This project demonstrates Engelsma’s ability to materially improve a home’s lived experience through siting and elevation decisions most buyers will never consciously notice, but feel every day. The primary living areas (where life happens) capture the lake as a constant presence, while secondary spaces remain functionally useful without overshadowing the main experience. That this home was conceived without a specific buyer in place reflects the depth of Engelsma’s understanding of how multi-generational lakeshore homes are actually inhabited.

This residence demonstrates Engelsma’s discipline in elevating a home’s lived experience through siting and configuration decisions that compound in value across generations of use.
